Travel Advice | Be Safer

You know that box in the closet of your hotel room? Has all those buttons with numbers on them? Well as it turns out, it’s your own personal very own safe! It’s completely free and yet over half the people I asked had never used one before. First of all, it’s against my nature to turn anything down that has the word “Free” on it (or “Gratis” depending on how wild my night was). Secondly, hotel burglaries are on the rise, so it’s about time we all started using that lonely little box in the back.

If the thought of hotel room burglars and fast fingered maids doesn’t scare you (or turn some of you on…), just remember that sometimes hotels make mistakes too. I’ve heard  stories of hotels accidentally checking two different guests into the same room and giving both working keys. I was unpacking once and a stranger walked into my room with a key and was just as surprised to see me as I was him. Imagine if I had been there 30 minutes earlier, unpacked, watched myself flex in the mirror for 20 minutes, then left my stuff out for this stranger to find.

For that reason alone I put everything valuable that I can fit into the safe. Including my dog….just kidding….or am I….?

My name is Spencer Howard, and I’m an Concierge/Host/Drunk who has spent the majority of the past 9 years on the road, hopping from hotel to hotel for months at a time. Through trial and mostly error, I’ve become what the airport security line calls an “Expert Traveler.” (It makes my Mother proud) But for those of us who go beyond occasional puddle jumper and enter the world of Hotel Homebody, it takes more than a complimentary mint and a flat screen TV to warm the cockles of our hearts. I hope you have insurance, because I'm gonna be throwing some knowledge bombs at your face. **Feel free to contact me with your questions about Travel Gadgets & Gear**
